5 Questions to Ask Yourself Before You Get Car Insurance

While we all know car insurance is necessary if you own a car, what you might not realize is that mileage on these policies can vary. From company to company and between policy types, there are several factors to consider before you make a final decision on which insurance policy to buy for your car. Ask yourself these 10 questions before choosing a car insurance policy:

What are my state’s minimum coverage requirements?

Each state has its own minimum requirements for car insurance, and different areas within the state may justify different coverage levels. For example, an urban area with a lot of drivers may require different insurance coverage from a more rural part of the state that has more deer than people per square mile.

What type of coverage do I need?

Car insurance comes in 3 tiers: liability coverage, collision coverage and comprehensive coverage. What type of insurance you need will mainly depend on your vehicle. If you have an older vehicle that you could afford to walk away from after an accident, liability coverage is plenty. If you’re financing or leasing a vehicle, comprehensive coverage is required before you drive it off the lot.

How much can I afford to pay for premiums?

Premiums vary widely depending on factors such as your age, driving history and the type of car you own. They also vary based on coverage levels. Keep in mind that a lower premium doesn’t always mean you’ll save money. If your insurance policy does not supply adequate coverage, it can lead to major expenses and not a lot of support in the event that you need to make a claim.

Should I choose a higher deductible?

A deductible is the amount that you’re responsible for paying in the event you need to make an auto insurance claim. A high deductible makes your monthly payment lower, but if you’re in an accident, it means you need to pay more. A lower deductible may be a better bet if you can afford slightly higher monthly payments but not the full amount of a higher deductible.

Are there any discounts available?

Look into discounts when shopping for insurance. There are almost always discounts available, especially if you’re looking for multiple policies. Some common ones to look out for are safe driver discounts and discount programs, discounts for paying the policy in full and discounts for bundling home and auto insurance.
