Asking Your Auto Insurance Agent the Right Questions

When reading through your auto insurance policy, you may end up with more questions than answers. Unfortunately, most policies aren’t written in plain English, and there’s plenty of jargon to have most people sufficiently confused when reading through them. You may find it helpful to talk to your insurance agent directly before committing to a policy. After all, you want to make sure your insurance policy works for you when you need it. Here are some questions we recommend asking your agent.

Who is and is not covered by the policy?

If you share your vehicle with anyone else, you need to know the answer to this question. Ask your insurance agent what happens if your partner or child drives your car. Ask what happens in the event that the car is involved in an accident with an uninsured driver. These are important considerations that aren’t always laid out clearly in the policy.

What happens if I’m in an accident?

This is likely the main question floating around in your mind when you’re shopping for auto insurance. If you’re working directly with an insurance agent, ask about what happens if you’re in an accident. Is there a simple-to-follow process? Will your premium increase, even if you’re not at fault?

What is the cancellation policy?

At some point, you may need to cancel your auto insurance policy. If you anticipate having to cancel the policy, you should ask your insurance agent how the process works. Find out if there are associated fees or a lengthy paperwork process.

Are there discounts available?

Most auto insurers would prefer that their customers drive safely, so they offer safe driver discounts. Some also offer discounts to students with good grades or members of the military. Remember, when you ask about discounts, the worst your insurance company can say is “no.” There’s no risk to asking.

Can I save money with a one time payment?

Monthly payments make life easier for many consumers, but for some, it’s easiest to pay the full amount of an insurance policy upfront. For these customers, there could be a financial benefit to paying all at once. Ask your insurance company if you can save money by making a one-time payment, rather than splitting your premium into monthly payments.

No two drivers are the same, so auto insurance policies shouldn’t be one-size-fits-all. Make the most of your auto insurance policy by asking your insurance agent the right question.
