How to Claim Theft on Homeowners Insurance

Theft can feel like a violation. Someone, more often than not a stranger, enters your personal space and rummages through your possessions to find something of value to them. No matter what they take, it’s an unsettling experience. One of the hardest parts can be figuring out what to do in the aftermath. Fortunately, your homeowners insurance company can help, as long as they have the information they need. Here’s how you can claim theft on your homeowners insurance:

Call Your Insurance Company

As soon as you have a chance, call your insurance company to report the theft. The earlier in the process you call the insurance company, the more likely it is that they will accept your claim. Provide as much detail as possible on the events that occurred.

Document the Incident

When making a claim for insurance, the burden of proof lies on you. Look for every item that was overturned, every item that appears to have been stolen, and any damage. Once you’ve found it, take photos. Use ample lighting to make sure they’re clear. If you have security cameras in your home that may have recorded the incident, make sure you save the footage somewhere secure.

Contact the Police

Although it may feel like an emergency when your valuables are stolen, when you call the police to make a report, opt for the non-emergency line. This way, you can provide as much detail as possible as to what has occurred or what you believe occurred leading up to the theft.

Gather Information on Valuables

Your insurance company will likely walk you through what they need in terms of information about the stolen items. If you can find serial numbers, model numbers and any other identifying information about the items, you’ll have a better chance of getting them replaced.

Submit Your Claim

Once you have taken all of the previous steps to ensure you’ll get adequate coverage from your insurance company, you can submit your claim. Make sure to provide documentation with proof of all the theft, all the damage and all actions you took prior to submitting the claim. If you don’t hear back within a few days, follow up with your insurance company. You can also call them while you’re waiting if you have questions or concerns.
