How to File a Car Insurance Claim

While it’s clear that car insurance can help you in the event of an accident, theft or other claim, you may start feeling clueless when it comes time to make a claim. Whether it’s stress from the event or a lack of familiarity with the process, people often get tripped up when they actually need to utilize the insurance they’ve been paying for every month. Here are the steps you need to take to make a car insurance claim:

Preparing for the Claim

Start by gathering all of the information you can about your insurance company, your vehicle and your policy. When you begin by putting everything together, you’ll deal with less frustration throughout the process. This includes any personal information you need to submit the claim, details about your vehicle such as mileage and the VIN (vehicle identification number), and details about your policy such as account number and coverage information.

Documenting the Incident Thoroughly

Take as many pictures as you can at the scene of the accident or vehicle damage. Where it makes sense, consider taking video as well. If possible, see if you can get witness statements and other information from the police report. The more evidence you can gather, the better positioned you will be to make a claim.

Contacting Your Insurance Company

Find the information for the claims department at your insurer. Most will have a direct line you can call to expedite the process. Once you find the number, call them as soon as you can. This will ensure that the details of the incident are fresh in your mind, and it will make your claim more likely to be approved. Provide as much information as you can. Consider having notes written down to go over during the call.

Assessing Damage and Estimating the Cost

To help you assess the damage, get your vehicle inspected by an insurance adjuster. They will be able to determine how much the insurance company will cover for repairs. If possible, be available to look at your vehicle with your insurance adjuster, and take note of anything they tell you about your vehicle’s condition.

Filing the Claim

While most people decide to file a claim online due to the simplicity of the process, you may decide you want to file your claim over the phone or in person with an agent. However you submit your claim, make sure you’re following the process to a T, and submit all necessary documents as soon as you can. From there, keep communicating with your insurance company, following up as needed. Figure out the expected timeline, and make sure your insurance company is sticking to it.

Handling Disputes or Denials

Your insurance company can deny your claim. In some cases, this is due to coverage limits. In others, it’s due to missing steps in the process. If you feel that your claim has been unfairly denied, seek assistance from a lawyer or a mediator.
