How to File a Homeowners Insurance Claim

Filing a homeowners insurance claim can be overwhelming, especially if you’ve never done it before.  It’s hard to know where to start, and it can be very stressful if you’re trying to figure this out during an emergency. While this task may seem daunting, there are actually only a few simple steps needed to make sure your insurance company has all the necessary information to help you with your claim.

Report Any Crimes to The Police

If theft, vandalism, or any other crime is involved, you must file a police report before you make a claim. A majority of insurance companies require this step, but not all claims require you to file a police report, so you may need to do some research. Make sure you write down names of the personnel you speak with in case you need to provide that information to your insurer. You will need to keep copies of your reports to file with your claim.

Contact Your Insurance Company

Insurance companies expect a prompt report of any incident that results in a claim, as well as a decision on whether you expect financial support or not. From there, your policy will dictate the next step. The most common way to contact your insurer is through a phone call, but some companies have an online contact point or even an app for customers. If the damage is minor, you might not want to file a claim so you can avoid a potential rate increase. When you contact your insurer, describe the damage and get information about how you’re covered. Don’t be afraid of asking questions. Your insurance company is there to help and support you.

Make Quick Repairs

If the damage to your home leads to unsafe conditions, make repairs as you see fit, but be sure to document everything. Take photos of the damage and keep receipts of any costs dealt with while making your quick repairs. Keep in mind, it’s recommended that you leave any damaged items alone until the adjuster visits your home. It’s common for homeowners insurance policies to encourage or even require this step. Keep in mind that these repairs are supposed to be easy and quick, so refrain from putting yourself in a dangerous position.

Document Everything

Documenting the damage goes hand in hand with filing a claim. Make sure to take numerous photos of the affected site, and if possible, provide your insurer with before and after photos. If pictures aren’t within your means, keep an itemized list of items that have been damaged or lost in the incident. If you are required to stay somewhere else for the duration of repair work, you should keep any and all receipts. Some insurance companies will provide additional coverage for living expenses.
